Fozzy's Firework Tips

Fozzy with fireworks going off all around

It’s a shame that the rest of the world hasn’t yet embraced silent fireworks.

They offer all the beauty and colour of a traditional display but just don’t come with the terrifying noise that sends so many of our fur babies into panic.

Firework season typically lasts Oct – Jan 1st and beyond but it can be heart breaking seeing them so stressed. If only we could explain to them what’s going on!

The sudden bangs and flashes bring so much stress and fear for our four-legged friends, but whatever we do to comfort them never feels like enough.

Hopefully, silent fireworks will one day become the global standard and everyone will see that we can celebrate beautifully and kindly, without the fear and stress it causes to animals.

Although fireworks can be stressful, there are still several things you can do to help reduce the fear.

Here are Fozzy’s Groom Room firework tips to help you reduce anxiety.

Before Fireworks Start...

  • Exercise early - If possible, take your dog for a long walk and a toilet break before dusk, so they are tired and settled before fireworks begin.

  • Create a safe space - Set up a quiet, cosy area such as a crate, den, or corner of a room with blankets and some of your clothing which provides them with your scent and provides comfort and familiarity. Let them settle where they are comfortable and allow your dog to retreat to a safe space if they want to, even if this is a room they are not usually allowed, such as a bedroom. Do not force them to go anywhere they do not want to be.

The link below will show you how to make a den.

  • Block out sights and sounds - Where possible, close windows, curtains, and blinds to reduce flashing lights. Turn on the TV, radio, or calming music such as a classical radio station (Classic FM) to mask the sound of fireworks.

During Fireworks...

  • Stay nearby - If possible, stay home and act calm and relaxed. Just by being there, your presence can reassure your dog. Speak softly and move calmly. It’s okay to comfort your dog if they seek reassurance. Never shout at, or punish your dog for being afraid.

  • Provide distractions – Get your dog’s toys out for them to play with and try to distract them away from the firework noise.

  • Provide a long-lasting chew - Giving them a long-lasting chew releases endorphin (a natural feel-good hormone) which reduces stress and redirects anxiety to provide positive focus. Should you wish to purchase any chews such as Beef head meat, Beef muscle meat, antlers, filled hooves, Moonbone, Ostrich bone, Knuckle bone & Trachea, you will find them here https://champspetfoods.co.uk/

  • Try a Thunder vest - A thunder vest (also called an anxiety wrap or calming vest) can help your dog during fireworks by applying gentle, constant pressure around their torso. This pressure can have a calming effect on the nervous system, helping to reduce anxiety and fear responses.

These can be purchased from many places but here is a direct link to one supplier. https://www.petsathome.com/product/thundershirt-calming-coat-jacket-for-dogs/P556

  • Seek professional help if needed - If your dog has severe anxiety, speak with your vet about calming supplements, pheromone diffusers, or prescribed medication.
