Fozzy's winter paw care tips

Protecting Your Dog’s Paws This Winter

Winter can be magical, but it can also be tough on your dog’s paws. Cold temperatures, ice, grit, and harsh de-icing salts can all cause dryness, cracking, and irritation. With a little extra care, you can keep your pup’s paws healthy, comfortable, and protected all season long.

1. Keep the Hair Trimmed

Snow and ice easily cling to long paw hair, forming painful ice balls between the pads. Regularly trimming the fur around the pads helps keep the paws clean and reduces the risk of slipping or irritation.

2. Moisturise to Prevent Cracks

Just like our skin, your dog’s paw pads can dry out in the winter. Using a paw-safe balm or moisturiser helps keep them soft and prevents cracking. Apply before walks for protection and after walks to restore moisture.

3. Consider Boots for Extra Protection

Dog boots are brilliant for shielding paws from freezing pavements, salt, and grit. They can also help older dogs keep their footing on slippery surfaces. If your dog isn’t used to boots, introduce them slowly with short sessions indoors.

4. Rinse & Wipe After Walks

Salt and de-icing chemicals are rough on paw pads and can cause irritation if licked. After winter walks, wipe or rinse your dog’s paws to remove residue. This also helps prevent dryness and keeps your home cleaner.

5. Keep Nails Trimmed

Long nails force the toes to splay more, increasing the likelihood of collecting snow and ice. Regular nail trims help your dog walk more comfortably and maintain proper paw health.

6. Watch for Redness or Lameness

If you notice your dog limping, chewing at their paws, or showing redness between the pads, they may be experiencing irritation from salt, ice, or dryness. Address it early with gentle cleaning and moisturising, and consult a vet if symptoms persist.

With a bit of extra attention, you can help keep your dog’s paws hydrated, protected, and pain-free all winter long. Healthy paws make for happier winter adventures! 🐾
